How we work

THE RULES
Vinyl Vault is a small archive of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, hip hop and the odd piece of vintage audio. Mostly original pressings. Where a record is a reissue or a later press, the listing says so plainly. Sleeve images come from the Discogs release database, so they show the pressing rather than our exact copy. The condition of the copy you get is in the grade and the notes, and every record is checked and graded before it goes up.

Grades, stated plainly

Grades follow the standard scale (M, NM, VG+, VG) and the sleeve is graded separately from the record when the two differ. If a copy has a fault worth mentioning, the listing mentions it.

Press stated up front

Originals and first pressings are the bulk of what we stock, but we list good reissues too. Country, year and press (1st, RP, RE, promo) are named in the title and on the listing. You never have to guess which copy you are buying.

Packed properly

Records ship out of the sleeve, in a stiffened mailer, with the jacket protected. Orders leave within 48 hours. Returns are open for 14 days if a grade misses.

HOW IT WORKS

Crate view

The default. A three-dimensional crate you scroll, drag or arrow through, exactly like flicking through a real bin. Click a sleeve to pull it out, click again to flip it over.

Grid view

A plain list of covers, prices and grades, no digging required. Switch any time with the toggle in the header; the site remembers which you prefer.

Questions

FAQ

What do the grades mean?

M is unplayed. NM plays with no surface noise worth hearing. VG+ has light marks and a low noise floor between tracks. VG plays through with audible surface noise but no skips. Anything below that we do not list.

Are the photos of the actual record?

No. Sleeve images come from the Discogs release database and show the pressing, not the individual copy. What is specific to your copy is the grade and the notes, which are written for that record. Want a photo of the exact copy before you buy? Email us and we will send one.

Do you take trades or buy collections?

Yes. We buy all collections, records and CDs. Send a list through the contact address below and we will come back with an offer.

Can I put a record on hold?

For 24 hours, once, on request. After that it goes back in the crate.

I do not get on with the crate. Can I turn it off?

Yes. The Grid / Crate switch in the header changes how collections are shown, and the choice is remembered on this device.

Let them pick the record.

A gift card for the shop, sent by email on the day you choose. It never expires, it can be spent across as many records as it covers, and whatever is left stays on the card. If you would rather pick the record yourself, dig through the crate instead. We will wrap it and leave the invoice out.

How it works

THE FINE PRINT

It arrives by email

On the day you choose, or straight away if you leave the date empty. It carries a code and a link; both do the same thing at checkout.

It does not expire

Whatever is left after an order stays on the card, and the card keeps working until it is spent.

It is not a discount code

A gift card is money. It goes in the same box at checkout, but it comes off the total rather than off the price.

Lost it?

The email can be sent again from the address below. We can look it up on the order it came from.

Still in print.

Records the shop can get hold of again. Every one is a current pressing, ordered in from the distributor when it is not on the shelf here, and the listing says how long that takes before you buy rather than after.

NEWEST FIRST

What the grades mean.

Every record here is graded by hand before it goes up, and the media is graded separately from the sleeve. A record can play beautifully in a tired jacket, and the listing says so. The scale below is the standard one used across the second-hand trade; where a copy has a fault worth mentioning, the listing mentions it on top of the grade.

The scale

BEST FIRST

How we use it

THE FINE PRINT

Media and sleeve, separately

Listed as media/sleeve: NM/VG+ means the record is Near Mint and the jacket is Very Good Plus. Where only one grade is given, it is the media.

Graded conservatively

If a copy sits between two grades it gets the lower one. We would rather you were pleased than argue about it.

If a grade misses

Returns are open for 14 days. If a record does not match its stated grade we cover return postage and refund in full.

Accessibility

We want anyone who wants a record to be able to buy one here. This site is built and tested against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and every part of the shop (browsing, searching, the bag and checkout) can be used with a keyboard alone, with a screen reader, or with the crate turned off.

Two ways to browse

NO DIGGING REQUIRED

Grid view

The Grid / Crate switch in the header is the important one. Grid view is a plain list of covers, titles, grades and prices with an Add to bag button on each, no three-dimensional crate, no dragging, no animation. Your choice is remembered on this device.

Crate view with a keyboard

Tab to the crate, then: up and down arrows dig, Enter or Space pulls the record in front out and opens its details, Enter again turns the sleeve over, Escape puts it back. The record in hand is announced as you go, and the read-out at the bottom of the crate is real text, not a picture.

Reduced motion

If your system asks for reduced motion, the crate stops gliding and the sleeves stop tilting. Nothing on this site moves, flashes or auto-plays on its own.

What we have done

WCAG 2.1 AA

Text and colour

Body and label text meets a 4.5:1 contrast ratio against the page, large type and hairlines meet 3:1, and colour is never the only way something is marked. Text can be resized to 200 per cent and the layout reflows to a single column without horizontal scrolling.

Keyboard and focus

Everything you can click, you can reach with Tab, in a sensible order, with a visible focus outline. Nothing traps focus. A skip link jumps past the header.

Screen readers

Headings, landmarks, lists and form labels are marked up properly. Changes that only show visually (a record added to the bag, a search result count, which record is in hand) are announced.

Sleeve images

Every sleeve image carries a text alternative, and the condition, press and grade of a record are always written out as words, never left to the picture.

WE WILL FIX IT

Checkout

Payment is handled by Shopify. We have chosen an accessible checkout, but that part of the journey is not ours to change; if you hit a problem there, tell us and we will take the order another way.

Tell us what does not work

If anything on this site gets in your way, email vinylvaultinc@gmail.com. We read every message and will answer within two working days. If you would rather order by email or by phone, say so and we will simply do it for you, at the same prices.
